Tour: Beneath the Stones: A Subterranean Tour of St Mary Magdalene’s

This guided tour explores the Undercroft and Chapel and explains how this subterranean sanctuary was created by inventive engineering and expressive Victorian design.

Located in the Undercroft of St Mary Magdalene’s Church, The Chapel of St Sepulchre is an early work by Sir Ninian Comper. The chapel was built as a memorial to Fr West, the chapel’s founder and first vicar. With its extensive carved stonework, stained glass, gilding, and ornamental paintwork, it takes us back to the 15th century. Come learn about this hidden gem’s heritage and its recent restoration.
